… a guest post by Greg (aka uncle Greg)
Like all stories this one has a beginning and that was a benefit concert at the Denton VFW Post October 7, 2017, where my cousin Walt Sanders was performing. He’s an ETA (Elvis tribute artist) and a really great one at that. You can find out more on his website here: One Night With You
This was the closest Walt has been to my neck of the woods in a long while as he’s from a little city called Bellevue, Ohio – which is also my mom’s hometown. And I actually new about Walt’s performance far enough in advance to invite my mom and her husband Bill, along with my brother Steve and his wife Amy (they invited a couple of their friends too) and my newest brother-in-law Rob along with my nephew Ben. (this is Ben’s blog btw).
So in conversations with Walt he mentioned that he collected poker chips from Harley Davidson dealers near his gigs for his uncle. In fact his uncle often joins him on the road. However Walt was without personal transportation on this trip and he asked me to stop by the local HD dealer for him – which, of course, I was happy to do. This was the first time I stepped foot in an HD store. (For the record I ride a 1985 BMW K100RS – when it runs).
We all had a fantastic time with Walt and his wife Terri during the concert and the next day for breakfast. Later I took Walt and Terri for a driving tour of DFW stopping at another Harley dealer before they had to hop on a plane for Ohio.
So one thing led to another and I caught the collecting bug. I started picking up chips at dealers near me and anywhere I happened to be traveling. And I also bought a couple for me to keep as well.
And then came the question: “what are you going to do with all the chips”? I believe that was Ben’s question. Unfortunately I don’t remember where or why I came up with the clock idea. But regardless, Ben was on board with the project.
